Balancing student/trainee learning with the delivery of patient care in the healthcare workplace

Following the national survey carried out by SMERC in 2013 to identify the priorities for medical education research in Scotland, the issue of balancing service delivery and training conflicts was considered by stakeholders to be the highest priority theme requiring further research. Despite this, a preliminary scoping exercise revealed very little activity with respect to already published literature reviews on this topic. We are therefore conducting a realist synthesis on this area which aims to understand how patient care and student/trainee learning can be simultaneously facilitated within the healthcare workplace. It will identify key complex interventions designed to balance patient care and student/trainee learning, and try to understand how and why such interventions produce their effects.
